LEGAL AID IN CANADA: THE NEED

Authors

  • John P Nelligan

Abstract

Despite the growth of legal aid bureaus across Canada, the development of organized legal aid is still far behind England and the United States. The author assesses who still needs help, what help is needed, the extent of the need, whether that need is being met and the need specific to criminal cases. He uses a number of sources, primarily questionnaires distributed to various focus groups, as the basis for his conclusions, which he hopes will help communities contemplating the establishment of new or extension of old legal aid facilities.
