THE INTERNATIONAL COMMISSION OF JURISTS

Abstract

This article explains the origins and organization of the International Commission of Jurists. It also describes its missions and the focus of two international gatherings. It focuses largely on the successful second meeting in Athens and the unanimous adoption of the Act of Athens, as well as a subsequent upsurge in Commission activity and a newfound clarity of purpose. The author lays out the stages of the Commission’s current project, which is the first by an organization of lawyers to enquire on a global scale into detailed provisions for the protection of individual rights. The project hopes to present the basis of agreement regarding human rights and a standard of administration in different legal systems of the world.
