THE CLERK OF THE CROWN'S TALE

Abstract

Given the overhaul of the civil service in Canada, this brief article examines the decline and fall of one office in particular, that of Clerk of the Crown in Chancery. It illustrates the continuing importance of the office in Britain and explains why that significance no longer exists in Canada. The author pays homage to the past, which he finds more relaxed and attractive than the present, when such government offices were honoured, even while exposing the very reasons those same offices wasted valuable time and resources.
