Abstract

This brief comment summarises the status and functions of the Governor General of Canada, tracing the origins of the office back to the Constitutional Act, 1791. The author examines how characterizing the colonies as belonging to the United Kingdom affected the executive principle and clearly summarizes the evolution of the office to the present day.
