Abstract

The doctrine of international servitude has been rendered topical by two events: the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice on the status of South West Africa; and the present controversy between Great Britain and Egypt over the status of the Suez Canal. In light of these important subjects, this article considers the history and character of the doctrine and sums up its controversial position regarding the status of international waterways in the thirties
