Abstract

Within recent years psychiatry has made much progress. The old hard and fast distinction between “sane” and “insane” has been displaced in favor of a sliding scale that interposes a degree between two extremes. The question of what determines someone incapable of understanding the nature of his or her criminal acts has been and continues to be a difficult one to answer.
