Abstract

In 1993, the Canadian Bar Association undertook the first major study on gender equality in the legal profession, culminating in the report entitled “Touchstones for Change: Equality, Diversity and Accountability.” More than 350 pages assessed the status of women lawyers in Canada in 1993 and proposed more than 200 recommendations designed to promote the advancement of women lawyers in all sectors of the legal profession. An analysis of the progress made in the last twenty years confirms the findings of numerous studies and highlights the fact that obstacles and resistance to change still linger, but that there is nevertheless an increasing momentum toward greater gender equality in the legal profession.
