L’AUTONOMIE REPRODUCTIVE : UN ENJEU ETHIQUE ET LEGAL POUR LE DIAGNOSTIC PREIMPLANTATOIRE

Abstract

Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) allows parents to select their embryos for in vitro conception. While the decision to give birth is private, it is not absolute. It is therefore important to examine in what measure it is socially acceptable for a couple to select their child according to genetic profile. Reproductive autonomy becomes an ethical and legal issue that must be defined. This article provides a description of the applications for PGD, the ethical issues and the law as it now stands in Canada, with a particular focus on parents’ freedom of choice in embryo selection.
