THE PUBLIC RELATIONS OF THE LEGAL PROFESSION

Abstract

This is a Presidential Address given at the Annual General Meeting of the Canadian Bar Association. The speaker chose to speak on the public relations of the legal profession for two reasons. He chose this topic because, for many years, Canadian legal discussion has been preoccupied with examining how to prevent those outside the profession from encroaching on the practice of law, and he hopes to address the question of the proper relationship between members of the legal profession and the lay public, predominantly from the lay perspective. His secondary purpose is to refute a previously left impression that he believes the legal profession to be an unpopular one.
