LAW AS A LINK OF EMPIRE

Authors

  • HON LORD SHAW

Abstract

The secret of true leadership of an empire is service and the secret of true unity of an empire is justice. Lord Shaw articulates how the legal profession has the difficulty of balancing between the pursuit of academic achievement and an honest livelihood and cultured life. The problems that face a young nation like Canada are similar to those that face the legal profession - how to be principles in heart and mind. To betray the ethical foundations of law would be to betray the structure of society itself, as law can have no majesty without integrity. Further, as Shaw argues law cannot be enclosed in a monumental past. As such law must feel the impact of modern ideas and evolve with time.
