THE FOREIGN INVESTMENT REVIEW ACT AN ANALYSIS OF THE LEGISLATION

Abstract

As the title suggests, this article analyses the mechanics of The Foreign Investment Review Act. It reviews the purposes for which the Act was enacted, and also considers the early legislative and political atmosphere resulting from construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway. In reviewing the policy framework surrounding the creation and administration of the legislation, the authors refer to a number of critical opinions regarding the desirability, benefits and detriments of foreign investment in Canada.
