BASIC PRINCIPLES OF INTERNATIONAL LAW - A REVALUATION

Authors

  • MAXWELL COHEN

Abstract

International law is often perceived as simplistic, unrefined, and modest in doctrinal detail and juridically significant precedents. In this article the author examines the past and present “basic principles” of international law, and attempts to illustrate that international law is not as simplistic as once thought. Through a discussion of the history surrounding classic international law, as well as its current state, the author illustrates that the “basic principles” of today have yet to find a common audience. He then suggests that mankind needs a sense of underlying unity, and that that unity may eventually develop in the form of tomorrow’s “basic principles” of international law. Only then, he concludes, will we accomplish international integration.
