THE BOUNDARIES OF CANADA

Authors

  • A FN POOLE

Abstract

In this article the author discusses how Canada’s international and internal boundary problems have come to be settled. The author examines the history surrounding the establishment of Canada’s southern boundary with the United States, as well as the boundary with Alaska. He examines the development of the boundaries running from the Atlantic to the St. Lawrence, from the Lake of the Woods to the Pacific Ocean, as well as the Alaska and Northern boundaries. The author then examines the development of Canada’s internal boundaries as provinces and territories were formed. The author concludes by illustrating the tendencies that can be found in boundary disputes to which Canada has been a party, and points out the differences in how older and newer boundaries have been drawn.
