CIVIL LIBERTIES IN THE IMMINENT HEREAFTER

Authors

  • A ALAN BOROVOY

Abstract

The author believes that the biggest issue regarding civil liberties in the near future will centre on confrontation politics, or populist tactics of participatory democracy. The article asks what the limits are on such activities and what extent of disruption by special interest groups their adversaries and society will tolerate. In order to shed some light on these questions, it focuses on issues presented by mass street demonstrations and anticipates new tactics of both disruption and retaliation. The author suggests that a re-evaluation of the concept of democracy will be necessary to keep ahead of these issues.
