Abstract

In order to examine problems specific to the future of criminal law and corrections, the first part of the article focuses on four macro problems with implications for the broader question of where the criminal justice system as a whole is headed. These problems are: 1) learning to cope with the full implications of technology, 2) addressing the quality of life gap between have and have not nations, 3) learning to cope with the inevitable increase in the pace of life in advanced nations and 4) implementing international resolutions to issues regarding technology and ecology. The second part paints a portrait of a high intensity future world conducive to increased social tension. The challenge, if confrontation is to be avoided, is to make participatory democracy, truly participatory. The third section discusses the implications for the criminal system, of a future world like the one described, and the final part addresses the implications for the prison system itself.
