Abstract

This symposium presents the views of six Canadians, four of them lawyers, on the MacQuarrie Report and its implementing legislation in the form of amendments to the Combines Investigation Act and the Criminal Code. It is a critical examination of the Report and the legislation, both in a technical legal sense and in the wider sense of social meaning to Canada’s economy. The first paper discusses the background, main features and problems; the next concerns combines, criminal law and the constitution; the third involves the recent regulation of monopolies; the fourth is on industry and combines; the fifth on labour and combines; and finally, the sixth article ends the discussion with some practical aspects of combines control.
