WHAT IS A PROFESSION?

Authors

Abstract

In order to gain some insight into the current definition of a “profession” as opposed to other employment, the author traces the root of the word and the development of its meanings and implications according to philosophers and writers. He argues that common usage has led to a decline in the word’s ability to convey a precise idea, necessitating a new definition. He seeks to provide those factors to be considered when deciding if a calling is a profession.
